Mupirocin is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo.
Mupirocin, the active ingredient in Mupiderm, is a naturally occurring antibiotic produced by fermentation of the organism Pseudomonas fluorescens. It has activity against a variety of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (even methicillin-resistant strains), other staphylococci, and streptococci, as well as certain gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli and Haemophilus influenzae. Mupirocin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through specific, reversible binding to bacterial isoleucyl tRNA synthetase. Due to this unique mechanism, it does not demonstrate cross-resistance with other antimicrobial agents.
Apply a small amount of Mupiderm ointment to the affected area three times daily for up to 10 days. Safety and efficacy have been confirmed in patients between 2 months and 16 years of age.
No known drug interactions have been identified with Mupiderm ointment.
Mupiderm is contraindicated for individuals with known hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any other component of the ointment.
Animal studies show no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there is no clinical data on use during pregnancy in humans. Use during pregnancy only if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown if mupirocin is excreted in human milk; caution is advised for nursing mothers.
Store in a cool, dry place, away from light, and keep out of reach of children.
